F1 Testing: Day 3

So a bit has happened so far today at Jerez, Nico Hulkenberg's car is out after a small fire, Daniel Ricciardo's car is out after smoke started to appear from the rear end, an Vettel's car is out after, you guessed it another fire after only completing 13 laps over the last three days. This test has not been good for RedBull at all, but these tests do not mean that the RedBull reign is coming to an end. This is the first test of a brand new car, and engine, there are going to be teething issues. However, McLaren, Mercedes, and Ferrari have all had less exciting tests that have actually given them some good numbers to work with, except for Hamilton who lost his wing and shunted it. Stay tuned for more news as the day goes.

Update 1 -New driver for McLaren Kevin Magnussen goes out onto the track for a few laps and takes the fifth place spot in today's testing.

Update 2 -Something I missed entirely yesterday, Bernie "I want to kill F1" Eccelstone wants to make the last 3 races double points, thereby extending the controversial rule for this season.

Update 3 -Hamilton is back out on the track, and we finally get to see the new Marussia car after a quick installation lap.

Update 4 -Here are the latest lap times for today

1. Jenson Button (McLaren) 1:25.03

2. Fernando Alonso (Ferrari) 1:25.4

3. Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) 1:25.9

4. Kevin Magnussen (McLaren) 1:26.3

5. Felipe Massa (Williams) 1:26.4

6. Nico Hulkenberg (Force India) 1:29.8

7. Adrian Sutil (Sauber) 1:30.1

8. Jean-Eric Vergne (Toro Rosso) 1:45.5

Update 5 -Hamilton says that he has been prepping for this season by slapping a turbo on his snowmobile to get used to the power delivery, even though the two turbo systems have nothing in common.

Update 6 -It somehow worked and Hamilton scores the top spot with a 1m23.952s

Update 7 - Here is the laps completed so far today.

4. Adrian Sutil (Sauber) 32 laps

5. Felipe Massa (Williams) 36

8. Nico Hulkenberg (Force India) 14

9. Robin Frijns (Caterham) 10

10. Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull) 3

11. Max Chilton (Marussia) 1

Update 8 -Adrian Sutil seemed to have crashed his Sauber, supposedly the front wing and left front wheel have been sheared off. No word on if he is ok.

Update 9 -Sutil is fine, according to those at the track viewing the CCTV recording of the crash, it was caused by a rear suspension failure.

Update 10 -Vergne's Torro Rosso is now out too, not good for the Renault powered cars this test.

Update 11 -And coming out of nowhere, Magnussen sets fastest lap so far, a 1m23.276s.

Update 12 -Vergne goes back out for all of a few meter's past the pit wall and the car comes to a halt again, then Magnussen practices a pit stop to only have his car stop after about 40ft past the pit. Not fun.

Update 13 -And that's a wrap for the third day of testing. Here are the fastest times.

Ricciardo and Vettel are in the same car no? I thought you could only run 1 car at each test.

Not sure, but they said that they were out there and both broke down, could be the same car?

Christian Horner was in favor of making the last three races worth double points as well. Meanwhile Toto Wolff realizes that fans are where the money comes from.

It really becomes interesting if RedBull don't think they will win it this year, which if testing is anything like what the races are going to be, that may not be far off, so I can see why Horner would want the last few races to be double points. Whereas Mercedes is actually doing quite well and if they continue to do well the double points may screw their championship aspirations.

I'm in the camp that feels it's artificial and takes away from the sport. I don't see any practical meaning to it. The teams have worked hard to get where they are for the last twenty something races, and then the FIA throws a wild card just because. I realize they're still racing for points but it just seems petty.
